Biography

Dr. Elgafy is an orthopedic fellowship trained spine surgeon serving patients in southern Michigan and northwest Ohio. He specializes in comprehensive surgical care of the spine in adults and children.

Dr. Elgafy is board certified in orthopedic surgery, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. In 2019 he completed a masters degree in business administration from the University of Toledo expanding his knowledge in management.

He joined the faculty of the University of Toledo in 2006, and currently holds the position of tenured Professor of Orthopedics and Chief of Spine.

Dr. Elgafy completed one year of advanced spine surgery training at the University of Washington, Harbor View Medical Center in Seattle, WA in 2006. Previous to that he completed his residency in Orthopedics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and obtained his medical degree from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt.

He is committed to providing outstanding patient care, patient satisfaction and education. His philosophy is: conservative spine care should always be tried first before considering surgical management. For that reason he works in coordination with the rehabilitation medicine and pain specialist teams to give the patients the best conservative management first.

He believes in understanding the patient’s own circumstances including lifestyle, work and leisure activities and in presenting the facts and the different options for managing the patient’s problem,  involving the patient and his family in the decision making process.

His spine practice covers cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine pathologies such as degenerative spine, deformities including scoliosis, infection, tumors, and fractures. His surgical techniques range from spine microsurgery to complex multilevel spine revision surgeries.  In particular he developed a special interest in revision surgery for patients who had previous failed spine surgeries.
